Even though the North American International Auto Show was cancelled due to continued health concerns surrounding the COVID-19 pandemic, we still got our annual dose of North American Car, Truck, and Utility Vehicle of the Year awards. We were elated to hear that the Ford F-150 had been named a finalist for the truck distinction while the new Mustang Mach-E was a finalist for the utility category.
If this feels like déjà vu, that’s likely because you are remembering 2015, when two Ford vehicles were nominated for awards. The finalists? The F-150 — which won — and the Mustang, which was competing for the car honors, rather than utility.
While only one Ford vehicle went home with the gold back in 2015, it’s a whole different ballgame in 2021. The Ford F-150 again claimed top honors, earning the title of North American Truck of the Year. And this time around, the Mustang was victorious, receiving the title of 2021 North American Utility Vehicle of the Year.
In determining the winners, jurors narrowed down the field to three finalists in each category, judging for innovation, safety, driver satisfaction, design, handling, value, and segment leadership. The F-150 beat out the Jeep Gladiator Mojave and Ram 1500 TRX while the Mustang Mach E beat out the Genesis GV80 and Land Rover Defender.
You can experience these award-winning vehicles for yourself when you schedule a test drive at Tipton Ford in Brownsville, Texas, today.
